Blending Traditions with Festivity: Celebrating Christmas in India

    Read Time: 3 Minutes

The festive season in India starts every year with Diwali (October/November) and carries on through Christmas and into the New Year, with an uplifting vibe, grand celebrations, and families and friends consciously coming together to spend quality time.

A predominantly Hindu nation, still the celebration of Christmas in India continues to grow in popularity. People taking leave from work can enjoy refreshing breaks and special Christmas hotel deals. Hotels offering Christmas Day lunch can be found in all major destinations around the country.

    Decorations

Christmas decorations traditionally involve fir trees (‘Christmas trees’) adorned with twinkling lights, baubles, seasonal animal ornaments, edible red and white candy canes, and foil-wrapped chocolate Santas. Some families practice the tradition of gifting personalised ornaments each year, with initialled hangings being amongst the favourites. Decked anytime from the start of December, the trees stay in people’s houses until early January or 12th Night, which falls on 5th January, although it is up to the individual to decide when to take their tree down.

    Food

Roast turkey, gammon, chestnut stuffing and cranberry sauce are traditional Christmas fare around the world, not only on the table for Christmas in India. However, to satisfy diverse palates, many hotels offering Christmas Day lunch include classic Indian dishes and other international favourites. Expect to find dal and rajma beside pizza, pasta and sushi.

Sweet treats include mince pies and Christmas pudding – a rich steamed cake filled with alcohol-soaked raisins and walnuts. These are usually covered in Brandy butter, fresh cream, custard and dusted with icing sugar to represent snow.

    Beverages

What better way to wash down your Christmas meal than with a glass of Champagne? Many households start their Christmas Day celebrations with a Champagne breakfast and keep the alcohol flowing through to a post-dinner Sherry or dessert wine with the cheeseboard.

Mulled wine and mulled cider add a touch of heartwarming spice to Christmas Day in India and in Western countries. Seasoned with star anise, cloves, cinnamon and a slice of fresh orange, this festive cup is the perfect accompaniment to Christmas carol singing performances.

    Gifting

Christmas in India is marked just as in other countries with the exchange of gifts between loved ones. From toys for the little ones to festively decorated gourmet food hampers packed with international delicatessen and relaxing getaways for the grown-ups. Shop around for the best Christmas hotel offers and treat someone special to the festive break you both deserve.

    Excursions

Many cities in India host Christmas or winter fairs, Christmas carol singing performances and tree-lighting ceremonies. You can check online listings for the most up-to-date schedule in your area.
